Southern Utah Chukar Hunt
December 21st, 2008

I’ve been struggling finding good chukar numbers around home, so I traveled down to Southern Utah to look for Gambel’s quail and chukars. It was a spectacular day with fresh snow on the ground. The quail were a bust, but we did find a fair number of chukars. Problem was, that like Homer’s Sirens, they called us from just a ways up the hill, then a little farther. Before I knew it, I was at the top of the mountain, it was getting dark and they were calling me from just the next mountain over.

Are there any chukars in the the south east corner of the state? By new Mexico.
For general chukar locations, go to the Utah Division of Wildlife website at http://www.wildlife.utah.gov then click on the Species –> Wildlife Conservation Database link and “Make a wildlife map.” You can select the species you are interested in and then zoom the map to the area you want. They aren’t exact locations, but with a little knowledge about site specific chukar habitat, you can find them. – Cheers, Chris
